AWS data residency and DPDP for India mid-market
Choosing ap-south-1 is not the whole residency story. This guide helps India mid-market teams verify where data, backups and logs live, how access paths work, and what to ask before treating a region choice as DPDP-ready — with Upvantix as an AWS Select Tier Services Partner. Not legal advice.

Choosing the AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) or Hyderabad (ap-south-2) Region is a necessary first step for many India data residency requirements, but it does not prove residency on its own. Before you treat a Region choice as DPDP-ready, verify where backups, logs, replicas and operational tooling store or process copies of data, and how access paths to that data work.
This guide helps India mid-market CTOs and cloud buyers ask better architecture questions than a region checkbox. Upvantix is an AWS Select Tier Services Partner. The guidance covers architecture and buyer diligence only — not legal advice, and not a DPDP compliance guarantee or certificate.
Beyond the Mumbai region
A single region label answers where primary compute and storage for a workload are intended to run. It does not automatically answer where snapshots land, where logs are aggregated, whether cross-region replicas exist, or which third-party tools may egress data.
Treat region choice as the start of residency diligence, not the end. Document the full path of data copies your operating model creates.
What India mid-market buyers should verify beyond Mumbai region
Use a checklist framing rather than a legal conclusion. Verify primary data location, cross-region replicas, backup and snapshot destinations, log aggregation destinations, support or break-glass access paths, and third-party tools that may process or store copies outside the intended boundary.
Ask who can access operational copies, under what roles, and how those paths are reviewed. Region alone does not settle those questions.
- Primary data location (e.g. ap-south-1 or ap-south-2)
- Cross-region replicas and DR copies
- Backup and snapshot destinations
- Log aggregation and SIEM destinations
- Support / break-glass access paths
- Third-party tools that may egress data
Residency vs sovereignty vs DPDP — plain language
In buyer conversations, residency usually means where data is stored and processed. Sovereignty language often adds claims about legal control over that data. DPDP (India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act) raises obligations that counsel and official guidance must interpret.
Use plain definitions so stakeholders share a vocabulary. Point legal obligations to qualified counsel and official sources. The guidance is not a legal interpretation of DPDP and does not establish that any workload is DPDP-compliant.
Residency diligence vs cloud foundations
Cloud foundations design the shared account, identity and network baseline for AWS. Foundations answer “how do we land and operate safely?” Residency and DPDP-related diligence answer “where do copies of data live, and what should we verify beyond region?”
The two are complementary. After you land in India, buyers still ask residency, backup, log and access-path questions. See the AWS Cloud Foundations page for the account, identity and network baseline.
Residency diligence vs a Well-Architected Review
An AWS Well-Architected Review examines workloads against framework pillars and produces risk-ranked findings and a prioritized backlog. Residency and DPDP diligence is a complementary buyer question — it often informs scope and risk, but it is not a substitute for a review.
For how a review runs, see our AWS Well-Architected Review guide.
Upvantix’s AWS partner tier
Upvantix is an AWS Select Tier Services Partner.
Partner tier describes program participation. It is not a compliance certificate and does not replace counsel for DPDP obligations.
How Upvantix fits
Upvantix offers Select Tier consulting conversations on architecture questions for India mid-market AWS — including residency-aware design questions about region, backups, logs and access paths. This guide covers architecture diligence only.
The engagement is architecture diligence, not a compliance certificate or legal opinion. Talk to Upvantix (AWS Select Tier Services Partner) about residency-aware AWS design questions.
Common questions about AWS data residency and DPDP
Is deploying in the AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) region enough for data residency?
It is a common starting point for India workloads, but buyers should still verify where backups, logs, replicas and operational tooling store or process copies of data. Region choice alone does not establish legal compliance.
Does Upvantix provide legal advice on DPDP?
No. Upvantix provides architecture and buyer-diligence guidance only. Legal conclusions belong with qualified counsel and official guidance.
How is this different from AWS cloud foundations?
Foundations cover landing-zone building blocks (accounts, identity, network, baselines). Residency diligence focuses on backups, logs and DPDP-related questions buyers ask beyond region choice.
How does this relate to an AWS Well-Architected Review?
WAR produces pillar-based findings and a prioritized backlog. Residency and DPDP diligence often inform scope and risk — they are complementary, not the same exercise.
